Quick answer: A power station's own electronics use energy even when the load is small. In our example, a 1,000Wh battery running a 10W AC load gives 76.5 hours if idle draw is ignored, but about 45.5 hours with 8W of idle draw. At light loads, idle draw can matter as much as the appliance itself.
The station itself uses energy
An enabled inverter and the station’s electronics can consume energy in addition to what appliances draw. That internal consumption is often called idle or standby draw. Its value depends on the product, which outputs are enabled and operating conditions. Our default is a planning assumption, not a measured specification.
An example at a light load
With a 1,000Wh battery, 10% reserve and a 10W AC load at 85% efficiency, ignoring idle draw gives 76.5 hours. Adding 8W of battery-side idle draw reduces the same estimate to about 45.5 hours. The arithmetic explains why a low-power example needs more than capacity divided by appliance watts.
Check the shutdown settings
A power-saving mode may switch off an output when a load is too small. That can conserve energy, but it may also interrupt the device you wanted to keep running. Check the manual for timeout settings and test the actual load. A long energy estimate does not override an output shutdown.
Improve the measurement
Compare energy consumption over a meaningful operating period, rather than relying on a single instantaneous reading. If a device supports an appropriate direct DC connection, it may avoid an AC conversion step, but connector fit alone is not enough: voltage, polarity and protocol must be suitable.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my power station run out faster than capacity ÷ watts?
The enabled inverter and electronics consume energy of their own (idle or standby draw), and conversion losses and your reserve reduce usable energy further. At small loads this internal consumption has a large effect.
How much does idle draw reduce runtime?
In our example with a 1,000Wh battery, 10% reserve and a 10W load at 85% efficiency: 76.5 hours without idle draw, about 45.5 hours with 8W of battery-side idle draw. 8W is a planning assumption, not a measured specification.
Can I avoid inverter losses?
If a device supports a suitable direct DC connection, it may skip the AC conversion step. Voltage, polarity and protocol must match — connector fit alone is not enough. Also check power-saving modes that can switch off small loads.
